That's right - and the turtles, which are largely made of space, also stand mainly on space. The further down you go, the more space there is.

There's a fair bit of space in everything.
Take a hydrogen atom; if the nucleus was the pinhead (dress-maker's, not drawing) lying on the floor of St Paul's Cathedral, it's associated electron would be popping around at a distance equivalent to that of the height of the dome; it's not "allowed" to come any closer.
That same space, like the one we look up at is expanding as, apparently, a few billion years ago, dark energy trumped gravity and is now pushing everything away from everything else. Except the turtles and the elephant.

I’m sure the better informed on here have the actual numbers and proportions but I understand that even the most solid-seeming normal matter is actually mostly space - the atoms in the molecules are tiny relative to the space between them. I suppose all of this changes when a star massive enough to become a black hole collapses into its own gravity well having fused all its available matter.

It is probably easier and quicker if you look up black holes on the internet rather than me explaining it.
Space is full of stuff but a lot of it is far apart so not much gravitational force is exerted due to the inverse square law I quoted below. It is enough to hold our solar system together and the Milky Way galaxy (which has super massive black hole at its heart). Even then things are mainly flying apart from each other at a slow rate - there are exceptions though as black holes are massive and dense enough to exert a huge gravitational pull.

Here's a question.
IF you were to drive in a completely straight line, would you end up back in the same place eventually that you started in?
The answer is no because the earth is an imperfect sphere.
There will always be inaccuracies because of the vast distance which would probably take you about 4 months. Also, if you were driving even just one degree off course then for every 60km you drive, you would be 1km further away.

A bloke I know has found himself massively down the Trump/Covid conspiracy hole and has recently branched out into flat earth too.
This is his latest claim:
"I’m only a couple weeks in so still a greenie. But from the biblical side is where I’m coming from. The narrative from Not A Space Agency is that the planets rotating 10k mph, while the sun is 93million miles away and was there before earth formed. Moon circles the earth, while the earth circles the sun and we’re swirling around the galaxy at X speed. Firstly, the Bible says the sun was created as light for the earth on day 4 of the 7 days of creation. Also God set the sun and moon in the firmament of heaven meaning the sky which is why you can see sometimes the sun inside the clouds or the sun in front of and partially behind other clouds. Same with the moon. Meaning they’re much closer to us than they say they are. And they’re the lights moving around for signs and seasons. The earth isn’t doing the moving. The lights are. That’s how we have day and night. Summer/winter.
By the way, you got any footage on the water of the curvature of the earth? "

Space isn't a vacuum. Its a 'space'. And therefore it allows components to exist within it. Just like any space. In a room, or a hall, or a huge arena. Things exist within space.
However, the larger the component, like a planet, the larger the gravitational pull. The earths size creates a gravitational pull that's large enough to stop us and everything floating off into the space.
There are vacuums within the space which are black holes. Where they go is a bit past my very naïve understanding of it all.
